B. R. Brestyánszki: RED
A co-production of Katona József Theatre and the Hungarian Company of the National Theatre in Subotica.
The competing play from the 2014 POSZT made it to the selection of the Katlan.
In 1941 Hitler requires the Hungarian Government to let the german troops pass through the country and in exchange Hungary’s demand on yugoslavian land will be recognised. Otherwise they occupy the country. Teleki commits suicide to avoid the bleak conflict and Horthy authorizes the march. Hungary takes side against the western empires. After Croatia claims independence (which breaks the ’eternal friendship’ treaty and Yugoslavia ceases to exist as a state) the hungarian troops also occupy yugoslavian territories and the spring of 1942 brings a razzia, that takes numerous victims (the so called ’cold days’)…
…and in 1944 a retaliation. The yugoslavian communist partisans have their revenge in victorius ecstasy. The defenseless hungarian population is collectively found guilty. Of fascism. Regardless of their age or gender. There are no trials, only tortures, lynchings, internalizations and mass executions.
This unique collaboration between the Katona József Theatre and Hungarian Company of the National Theatre in Subotica creates a play based mainly on witnesses’ and their heir’s confessions and aims to provide an authentic and somewhat unbelievable view about something, we almost forgot, because the terrorized victims suffered in silence for so long. They had no choice so they spread their arms and stayed silent… Because the Terror could reach you anywhere, up until the very recent years.
